from Elmarie Botes, white-wine maker
Since harvest started on the 21st January for Nederburg Wines, it’s been all systems go for White Winemaker Elmarie Botes. Thankfully, there’s a popular saying that ‘great wine starts in the vineyard’ - and that definitely holds true for Nederburg.
According to Libertas Viticulturist, Isabel Teubes, the early winter of 2019 provided much-needed relief to the drought with early rainfall that was better than expected. There was a lot of wind at the end of October and November, leading to less than optimal fruit set, especially in later cultivars.
Thankfully, a cool November and December led to good, even grape growth, which was quite vigorous. The current trend shows that the white grapes coming into the cellar have good weight ratios. The heatwave in the 2nd week of January did cause some sunburn damage to exposed grapes, but thanks to good canopy management, no significant damage was caused.
We wish the Nederburg team all the best as they jump into for the busy times ahead!
