Pinotage, South Africa’s home-grown grape was created in 1925 in Stellenbosch by Abraham Izak Perold, when he crossed Hermitage (aka Cinsaut) and Pinot noir, but it took almost another four decades before a wine made from Pinotage vines was launched commercially. Although there are now many examples of Pinotage made in many parts of the world, the cultivar is considered uniquely South African.
Pinotage excites enormous passion and there are Pinotage fan clubs, associations and societies in many parts of the world. It even has its own day when wine lovers from across the globe celebrate International Pinotage Day (#PinotageDay) on the second Saturday of October, annually. And that’s exactly what we’re doing on 10 October – paying homage to this nifty grape variety!
At Nederburg, we’ve been experimenting with the making of Pinotage for more than 20 years. Well-represented across our multi-tiered range, our The Winemasters Pinotage is one of the most popular, celebrated for its fusion of fruit intensity and classical structure. “We try to capture the fresh fruit characters with elegance and harmony to give taste pleasure. Our wines are also very food-friendly,” says Zinaschke Steyn, our assistant red-wine maker.
The Winemasters Pinotage epitomises these qualities. It’s luxuriously, velvety red in colour and shows sweet, juicy plum and red berry aromas with a hint of vanilla wood spice. Its generous fruit flavours are balanced by soft, very approachable tannins for easy enjoyment. Very versatile, it’s delicious with roasts, casseroles and pizza and pasta dishes. If you want something different, serve it with dark chocolate. The ripe red fruit of the Pinotage combines beautifully with the dusky cocoa flavours.
